STRANGE WOODS

Flute choir (2009)

Commissioned by Calisa Hildebrand. The musical material for Strange Woods was generated from Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “Fairy-land.” Using a modified tintinnabuli-type system, pitches and rhythms were assigned according to predetermined patterns and groups and to the accents of the text. These raw materials were then redistributed, rearranged, and edited. The imitative quality of the work adds a sense of mischievous playfulness. The resulting independence of parts makes this piece a challenge. Some basic extended techniques are required (key claps and flutter tonguing).
