String quartet (2001)

“Silver Birch” and “Cherry Tree” are part of an as yet incomplete set for string quartet. These brief movements illustrate different moods. “Silver Birch” evokes an eerie winter scene, with a continually evolving serpentine melody, supported by quiet clusters of artificial harmonics. In contrast, “Cherry Tree” is cheerful, light, and delicate. Its folk-like melodic material becomes increasingly fragmented, and individual parts break free, creating an exciting interlocking texture.
